Sediment Control for South Florida Job Sites
Silt fence and inlet filters are the basic sediment control tools on most Miami construction sites, and they are what we install when builders and homeowners need them. As silt fence contractors, Elite Hydroseeding Miami puts in perimeter fence along the low sides of a lot, protects storm drain inlets on and near the site, and maintains both until the ground is seeded and stable. Since we also do the final seeding, the same team handles the sediment controls at the start and the stabilization at the end.
Why it matters here
Florida DEP points out that sediment and other pollutants from construction sites can significantly affect water quality. Projects disturbing an acre or more, or smaller parts of a larger development, need state Construction Generic Permit coverage, a stormwater pollution prevention plan, and best management practices to limit erosion and sedimentation. Local stormwater rules apply separately. In Miami, storm drains and swales lead to canals, Biscayne Bay and land that sits over the Biscayne Aquifer, which is the main drinking water source for the metro and is very exposed to surface contaminants.
Silt fence installation
Silt fence is a geotextile fabric on stakes, trenched into the ground along the downhill edge of the work. Water seeps through slowly while sediment settles out behind it. The part most often done wrong is the toe: if the bottom of the fabric is not buried, water simply runs underneath. On Miami lots, rock close to the surface can make trenching hard, so we cut the trench where it is needed or use a backfilled, stabilized fence detail where the plan allows. Wire-backed or stabilized fence goes where heavier runoff is expected.
Inlet protection
The storm drain inlet in the street or parking lot is often the first place sediment escapes. We install inlet protection fitted to the type of drain: fabric barriers around area drains, sandbags or a gravel-and-mesh barrier across curb inlets, and filter inserts where the plan calls for them. Inlet controls need checking after every storm, since a clogged filter can push water into the street.
Maintenance through the rainy season
During the wet season from late May to mid-October, sediment builds up quickly behind silt fence. Fabric tears, stakes lean, and equipment runs over lines. We offer maintenance visits to remove sediment, re-set fence and replace damaged sections, plus post-storm checks during hurricane season. When a site is seeded and stable, we take the fence and inlet controls out.
Small sites need care too
A pool dig, a home addition or a teardown in an older neighborhood may be well under an acre, but it can still put mud in the street after a summer storm, and local permits often ask for sediment controls. We install a few hundred feet of fence and protect the nearest drain, then come back to seed once the work is done.
Working from your plan
If your project has a SWPPP or an erosion and sediment control plan, we install what it shows and keep a simple record of what was placed. If there is no plan, we walk the site, show you where water will leave it, and recommend the minimum controls that make sense.

Area drain protection
Fabric barriers around yard and parking area drains.
Curb inlet protection
Sandbag and gravel-and-mesh barriers at street inlets.
Inspection and maintenance
Sediment removal, repairs and post-storm checks.
Removal at close-out

Rate Schedule Prices for Sediment Controls
| Item | Price (source) |
|---|---|
| Standard silt fence without reinforcement, every 100 linear ft (state DOT bid prices, 2025 edition) | $378 |
| Reinforced (stabilized) silt fence, every 100 linear ft (same list) | $748 |
| Silt fence barrier around one inlet (same list) | $102 |
| Sandbag inlet protection, one inlet (same list) | $141 |
| Gravel-and-mesh inlet protection, one inlet (same list) | $172 |
These are state DOT bid prices, 2025 edition, not Miami quotes. Rock near the surface, site length and maintenance visits change the total, and we count footage and inlets on site. For a feel of the market only; your price comes in a written quote.
Installing Sediment Controls
1. Read the site
Find where water leaves the lot and which drains it reaches.
2. Lay out
Mark fence lines and inlets from the plan or the walk.
3. Install
Trench, stake and backfill fence; fit inlet protection.
4. Maintain
Remove sediment and repair after storms.
5. Remove
Take controls out once the site is seeded and stable.

Why Choose Us for Silt Fence & Inlet Filters
Toe buried, every time
Silt fence only works when the bottom is trenched, even in rocky ground.
Start-to-finish coverage
We install controls at the start and seed the site at the end.
Storm-season checks
Maintenance visits after heavy rain keep controls working.
Silt Fence & Inlet Filters Questions
Does a small home renovation in Miami need sediment controls?
The state CGP generally applies at one acre and up, but local permits can require sediment controls on smaller jobs. Check your permit conditions; we can install what they ask for.
How often should silt fence be checked in the rainy season?
Follow your plan's schedule, and always after heavy rain. In Miami's wet months, that can mean frequent checks.
Can silt fence go in over rock?
Yes, but trenching takes more effort. Where a trench is not possible, other details such as stabilized fence or sediment logs may be used if the plan allows.
Who removes the fence when the job is done?
We can. Fence and inlet protection should come out once the site is stabilized, not before.
