Lawns Along the Lakes

Hydroseeding in Miami Lakes often happens at the water's edge. The original development, master-planned by Lester Collins on the Graham family's dairy farm starting in 1962, was built around curving tree-shaded streets and numerous curving lakes. Water covers about 0.8 of the town's 6.5 square miles, or roughly 13%, which means many backyards slope down to a lake bank.

Holding lake banks

The slope from lawn to water is where most soil loss happens. Wave action, mowing too close and summer storms all strip grass from the bank. We reshape the slope, lay erosion control blankets or apply hydromulch and seed so roots hold the soil. For steeper or longer banks, bonded fiber matrix gives stronger cover while grass establishes.

Still being built

The Graham family said for years that Miami Lakes would be a 30-year development, but they are still developing it today, and much land is still held as undeveloped parcels and commercial property. New phases mean graded lots, retention areas and road edges that need silt fence during construction and seeded cover afterward.

Many small parks

The town has more than 100 parks, mini parks, tot lots, greenways and trails, including Miami Lakes Optimist Park, Veterans Park and Royal Oaks Park. Greenway strips and small parks take heavy foot traffic. Overseeding and topdressing worn areas keep them green without tearing out the whole area.

A wetter climate

Miami Lakes has a tropical rainforest climate (Af) bordering on tropical monsoon, so rain is spread across more of the year than in much of the county. That helps germination but means mulch needs a good tackifier so it stays put between storms.

Miami Lakes Questions

How do I stop my lake bank from eroding?

We regrade the slope, add blankets or bonded fiber matrix and seed it so roots hold the soil.

Do you work with builders on new phases in town?

Yes. While work is underway we put up silt fence and protect the drain inlets, and when it wraps up we hydroseed the graded areas.

Can worn park strips and greenways be overseeded?

Yes. Aeration, topdressing and overseeding restore worn areas without full replacement.

Does frequent rain wash away fresh hydroseed?

We use a tackifier in the mulch so it sticks between storms, and blankets on steep slopes.
