Lawns Where the Water Sits High

Hydroseeding in Cutler Bay has to account for water from below as well as above. The town lies in a flat, low coastal wetland area on Biscayne Bay, and during the rainy season its canals, channels and lakes are often full while the groundwater table rises close to the surface. Seed that sits in saturated soil for days rots instead of rooting, so drainage comes first here.

Ridge versus lowland

Cutler Ridge, an ancient coral formation, runs through the area at about 14 feet above sea level. Land east of the ridge is subject to storm surge, while ground west of it is generally protected. In practice, yards near the ridge drain better, and lots toward the bay and around the Lakes by the Bay neighborhood need more attention to grade and runoff paths.

Grading for runoff

On flat ground, small changes make a big difference. We fine grade to move water away from foundations and toward swales or the street, and our grading crews take care of excavation and trenching for drainage lines where a yard has nowhere to send water.

Lake and canal banks

With so much water in town, many homes back onto a lake or canal. Those banks lose soil every time the water rises and falls. We use erosion control blankets and hydromulch to protect bare slopes and get grass rooted along the edge, which is the most practical form of slope stabilization for a residential bank.

After Andrew

Hurricane Andrew made landfall near Cutler Ridge in 1992, and the push to incorporate the town in 2005 grew partly out of that recovery. Neighborhoods rebuilt in the 1990s now have lawns that are 30 years old, thin in shade and worn in traffic areas. Lawn renovation with soil prep and reseeding brings them back without stripping everything.

Black Point Marina, the largest public marina in the Miami area, sits just south of town. Get a free estimate or call (786) 713-9539.

  • Cutler Ridge. The ancient coral ridge stands about 14 feet above sea level here; land east of it is subject to storm surge.
  • Water area. Of the town's 10.3 square miles, about 0.4 square miles (3.87%) is water.
  • Incorporation. Voters approved the charter and the name Cutler Bay on November 9, 2005, after recovery from Hurricane Andrew spurred the effort.

Cutler Bay Questions

Can you hydroseed when the ground in Cutler Bay is wet?

We avoid seeding saturated soil. If the water table is high, we fix grade and drainage first and seed when the surface can drain.

How do I stop my canal bank from washing away?

Reshape the bank, cover it with an erosion control blanket or hydromulch, and get grass roots established along the edge.

Does it matter if I live east or west of Cutler Ridge?

Yes. East of the ridge the ground is lower and floods more easily, so we pay closer attention to runoff and surge debris.

My lawn from the 1990s rebuild is thin. Do I need all new grass?

Usually not. Aeration, topsoil in the bare spots and reseeding often bring it back.

Do you offer silt fence for home additions?

Yes. Silt fence and inlet protection keep soil out of nearby canals while work is underway.
