A City Named for Its Rock
Hydroseeding in Coral Gables begins with the stone the city is named after. George Merrick named the development for his family's home, built of Miami Limestone, the local rock most people call coral rock. That same limestone lies under most yards here, often covered by only a few inches of soil, which is why new lawns in the Gables frequently need imported topsoil before seeding.
Planned from the start
Coral Gables incorporated on April 29, 1925, as a planned community based on the City Beautiful movement, and it is known for strict zoning rules. Yards are part of that picture. When a lawn is replaced, owners usually want an even, uniform look across the property. Hydroseeding gives a consistent stand of grass from one mix, with no sod seams to grow in.
More water than land
Of the city's 37.2 square miles, about 24.0 square miles, or nearly 65%, is water. Waterfront lots on canals and the bay deal with salt spray, high water during storms and banks that need protection. Along seawalls and canal edges we keep a mulch buffer and avoid grading that sends runoff straight into the water, and we use erosion control blankets on any sloped bank.
Golf course and campus grounds
The Biltmore Hotel and Golf Course opened in 1926, and the University of Miami campus was built on 240 acres just west of U.S. 1. Large managed turf areas like these show what consistent soil prep and grading do for grass. On residential jobs we bring the same approach: test the soil depth, fix low spots and seed on a smooth surface.
Remodels and new homes
Renovation and rebuilding are steady in the Gables. During construction, silt fence and inlet protection keep soil off the street and out of drains. After the work, we grade, add topsoil and hydroseed the disturbed area.

Coral Gables Questions
Why do Coral Gables lawns often need topsoil?
The coral rock is usually close to the surface. A few inches of good topsoil gives roots room and holds water better.
Can you work on waterfront yards near a seawall?
Yes. We keep runoff away from the water, use blankets on any bank and leave a mulch buffer along the edge.
Will a hydroseeded lawn look uniform enough for the Gables?
Yes. One seed mix across the area grows in evenly with no seams. It takes a few weeks to fill in fully.
Do you set up silt fence for home renovations?
Yes. Silt fence and inlet protection keep soil out of the street and drains during construction.
