Two Kinds of Ground in One Small City
Hydroseeding in Florida City depends on which side of the old railroad you are on. Much of the city sits on the Miami Rock Ridge, a band of Miami Limestone that runs from northeast to southwest and stands 5 to 8 feet above sea level. East of the ridge was the East Glade, an arm of the Everglades whose soil was mostly a limey material called Biscayne Marl. Those two surfaces need different soil prep, and a good lawn plan starts by figuring out which one you have.
On the ridge
Ridge lots tend to have rock close to the surface. Before settlement the ridge carried South Florida slash pine, and those pine rocklands were crushed by equipment and turned into farmland during the 1900s. Crushed rock makes a firm base but leaves little room for roots, so we usually add topsoil and grade it smooth before seeding.
In the old glade
Marl ground east of the ridge holds water longer and can turn slick and sticky after rain. Canals dug in the early 1900s lowered the water table, and potatoes were grown there before housing spread into the area in the late 1970s. Here the job is shaping the surface so water moves off, and keeping fine marl from washing into drains with silt fence and inlet protection while the lawn fills in.
The Long Slough
Florida City was once crossed by a slow-moving slough that entered the city near Redland Road and Lucy Street. As canals were built, the slough was drained and became a low valley in the ridge, with culverts under several roads. Lots along that old path can still collect water. We check for low spots before grading and may suggest a swale or drain line; our grading crew handles the excavation and trenching for drainage if it is needed.
Where the mainland ends
Florida City is the last stop on the mainland before the Keys and sits at the start of the only road through Everglades National Park. A lot of the property here is commercial and hospitality ground, where we handle commercial hydroseeding, slope stabilization on retention ponds and silt fence installation for site work.

Florida City Ground Facts
- Miami Rock Ridge. Most of the city sits on a Miami Limestone ridge 5 to 8 feet above sea level that crosses town from northeast to southwest.
- Biscayne Marl. Soils in the East Glade, east of the ridge, were primarily a limey soil called Biscayne Marl.
- Long Slough. A slough once crossed the city; canal building drained it into a low valley in the ridge with culverts under roads.
- Pine rocklands. The ridge's slash pine rocklands were crushed by equipment and converted to farmland during the 1900s.

Florida City Questions
How do I know if my lot is on rock or marl?
Rock ridge ground is firm and stony a few inches down; marl is fine, pale and sticky when wet. We dig a few test spots during the site visit.
My yard floods in one corner. Could that be the old slough?
It could, if you are along its former path. Either way, we can regrade the area or add a swale or drain line.
Does marl soil need topsoil before hydroseeding?
Often a layer of better topsoil helps rooting and drainage. We decide after checking how wet the area stays.
Do you hydroseed retention ponds on commercial sites here?
Yes, with hydromulch or bonded fiber matrix on the banks and silt fence while the cover grows in.
