Hollywood Was Graded From Scratch
Hydroseeding in Hollywood often means fixing yards on ground that was shaped by machines a century ago. When Joseph Young laid out the city in the 1920s land boom, 1,500 trucks and tractors cleared land and graded streets, and two yacht basins designed by Panama Canal engineer George Washington Goethals were dredged and connected to the Intracoastal Waterway. A lot of the city sits on graded or filled ground, which affects drainage and settling in today's yards.
Postwar neighborhoods
By 1960 Hollywood had more than 12,170 single-family homes. Many of those lawns have been patched for decades. Typical problems are settled low spots, thin soil and turf worn out by shade and age. Lawn renovation with topsoil, leveling and overseeding often gets them back without a full tear-out.
Near the water
About 3.46 of the city's 30.8 square miles, or 11%, is water. Lots near the Intracoastal and canals take salt spray, higher water during storms and runoff that goes straight into the waterway. On those properties we keep runoff in check with grading, sediment control during any work, and erosion control blankets on sloped banks.
Storm history
Hollywood was severely damaged by the 1926 Miami hurricane, with losses second only to Miami, and Hurricane Irma caused damage in 2017. Storms bring down trees, and the cleanup leaves ruts and bare soil. We regrade disturbed areas, add topsoil and hydroseed so the lawn recovers evenly.
Remodels and teardowns
When an older home is renovated or replaced, bare soil on small lots near streets and drains needs silt fence and inlet protection during work. Once construction is done, we grade and seed the yard.

Hollywood Questions
Why does my Hollywood yard have sunken spots?
Much of the city sits on graded or filled ground that settles over time. We fill and level the low areas before reseeding.
Can you work on lots along the Intracoastal or canals?
Yes. We control runoff, use sediment control during work and protect banks with blankets.
Will a remodel at my Hollywood home need silt fence?
If soil is exposed near streets or drains, silt fence and inlet protection are a good idea and often required.
Is overseeding enough for an older lawn?
If a good part of the lawn is healthy, yes. Otherwise a full hydroseed after soil prep is better.
