A Home Lawn Built From the Ground Up
Residential hydroseeding in Miami is how we turn a bare new-construction lot, a yard cleared after a pool or addition, or a worn-out lawn into a seeded lawn in one visit. We spray a slurry of seed, mulch, tackifier and water across prepared soil. The mulch shades the seed and holds moisture, the tackifier keeps it in place, and the green dye shows exactly where it landed. For most homeowners, this is the lawn installation option between dry seed and a full sod job.
Is your yard a good fit?
Hydroseeding suits yards that are bare or nearly bare, that get at least half a day of sun, and that can be watered for the first few weeks. It is a good match for big lots in the western suburbs and the Redland, new subdivision yards, and side and back yards where a sod truck cannot reach. It is a poor match for heavy shade under oaks, for yards where you want St. Augustine, and for slopes over about 10 percent, which UF/IFAS recommends sodding.
The soil problem
The surface rock across much of the metro is Miami limestone, and UF/IFAS describes most Florida soils as sand-based with little organic matter. After a house is built, it is usually worse: compacted fill, rock fragments and construction debris. UF/IFAS gives a simple test: if you cannot push a thin rod at least 6 inches into moist soil by hand, compaction will limit the turf. We do that check, remove debris, and rake out anything larger than a golf ball. Where there is only a skim of soil over rock, we add topsoil or compost and blend it in before seeding.
Choosing between bahia and bermuda
Bahiagrass forms a deep root system, persists in poor, sandy soils and gets by with little water or fertilizer, which makes it a common pick for large lots and areas without irrigation. UF/IFAS notes it prefers acidic soil and can yellow from iron deficiency when soil pH is above 7.0, which is worth testing on ground near limestone. Argentine bahia is the usual lawn choice. Seeded bermuda (UF/IFAS mentions Princess 77 and Sultan) makes a denser lawn and handles wear and salt, but needs full sun, more mowing and more care. We talk through both at the visit.
Timing in Miami
Both grasses can be seeded year-round here, but each season has a cost. In the dry months from November through April, rain is scarce and irrigation has to do the work. In the wet season from late May to mid-October, germination is fast but a heavy afternoon storm can move seed on bare, freshly graded ground. Spring and early summer are often the easiest window. In August and September we keep an eye on the tropics and will move a job rather than spray ahead of a storm.
Hydroseeding cost and what drives it
Price depends on square footage, how much soil work is needed, access for the hose, and seed choice. Minimum job fees are common for small areas. The cost table below shows published national ranges. On a Miami lot, imported topsoil is often the largest variable, so we measure and list it on its own line.
After the spray
Keep the slurry moist. UF/IFAS recommends several short waterings a day for the first 7 to 10 days, then a daily quarter to half inch for another 7 to 10, then two or three times a week. Hold fertilizer for 30 to 60 days after planting. Expect sprouts in about 1 to 2 weeks, and plan on the first mow at 4 to 6 weeks.
What a Home Lawn Job Includes
Each yard gets the pieces it needs, nothing more.
Site walk and soil check
We measure the area, probe for rock and compaction, and look at sun, shade and water.
Debris and rock cleanup
Construction scraps, roots and rock larger than a golf ball are removed from the seedbed.
Topsoil or compost blending
Added where the root zone is thin and mixed into the top several inches.
Fine grade
Final shaping that tips the yard off the foundation and sends runoff to a swale or drain.
Seed and slurry
Bahia, seeded bermuda or a blend, sprayed with mulch and tackifier.
Watering and mowing guide
A written schedule for the first six weeks, matched to the season.

Residential Hydroseeding Questions
Why don't you spray St. Augustine grass?
According to UF/IFAS, St. Augustinegrass can only be started from sod, plugs or sprigs. There is no practical seed for it, so for a St. Augustine lawn we recommend sod.
What is the hydroseeding cost for a yard on Miami's rocky ground?
In HomeGuide's figures, a 5,000 square foot yard runs $1,000 to $1,750, and LawnStarter notes most companies have a $300 to $500 minimum. Miami yards often need topsoil over rock, which is quoted separately after we measure.
How long until the lawn fills in?
Bermuda shows within a week or two in warm weather and fills in over several weeks. Bahia germinates more slowly and takes longer to form a full cover.
Can I hydroseed if I have no sprinkler system?
Yes, but you need a reliable hose setup for the first few weeks. Bahia is the better choice where long-term irrigation is limited, since it survives dry spells by going dormant and recovers when rain returns.
Should I fertilize the new lawn right away?
No. UF/IFAS advises waiting 30 to 60 days after planting so roots can use the nutrients instead of losing them to runoff or leaching.
